Canadian Digital Media Trends by the Numbers for June 2012

Here’s a look at some of the key trends and numbers that are impacting Canada’s digital economy for June 2012:
Connectivity for Canadians of any financial status and geographic location:
- Over 100 – the per cent that Canada will exceed in wireless connectivity penetration in just a few years
- 88 – the percentage of Canadians that the CRTC estimates have connectivity access of 5 Mbps or better
Productivity improvements through the adoption of digital media technologies and the infrastructure to support it:
- 260,000 – the number of jobs that the Canadian wireless industry supports, plus $43 Billion in economic activity
- 30 times – the amount that mobile data traffic over cellular networks is expected to grow in Canada by 2015
Mobilizing Digital Content from ensuring Canadian content is accessible to realizing commercialization opportunities created through content development or management:
- 50 – the number of authors beta testing Kobo’s new pilot for a DIY publishing platform called “Kobo Writing Life”
- 94.2 million – the number of single track music downloads that Canadians purchased in 2011
Access to Capital and investments required for technology and business growth:
- $10,000 to $200,000 – the amount of funding available per project through OCE’s Market Readiness program
- $200,000 – amount of investment capital to be raised for UnBanked – a Calgary-based local business seed fund
Access to Talent including the digital skills and talent required to meet rapidly evolving workplace needs:
- 1,200 – the number of job openings in Waterloo’s tech sector right now (huge demand)
- 2035 – the year that B.C.’s government aims to establish a world-class “knowledge economy” by investing in education & skills training
